Purpose of the Role

  • As part of our respite and training offer for young carers, you will join our friendly and dedicated team to support young carers aged 5–25 in enjoying a worry-free break from caring. You’ll help them engage in peer support, develop social skills, and build confidence during their time with us.

    Activities are planned by our Activities Co-ordinator and led by a Lead Sessional Worker, and may include:
  • Day trips and group outings
  • Club sessions
  • Residentials
  • Workshops and training events
  • Your involvement helps create a safe, fun, and supportive space for young carers to relax, connect, and grow.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Work under the direction of a Lead Sessional Worker to deliver activities in line with session plans and staff information packs.
  • Take responsibility for specific tasks or areas during sessions as agreed.
  • Comply with all risk assessments, safeguarding protocols, and safety guidance.
  • Respond to rota requests promptly to ensure required staffing levels for each session.
  • Attend bi-monthly online team check-ins and ongoing training sessions.
  • Respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns, incidents, and accidents, with the support of the Lead Sessional Worker.
  • Build positive relationships with young carers, encouraging participation and confidence.
  • Follow all Carers Trust Solihull policies and procedures related to your role.
  • Contribute to creating a welcoming, inclusive, and fun atmosphere for all attendees.

Preferred Skills and Qualities

  • At least two years’ experience working with children or young people (paid or voluntary).
  • Creative and adaptable approach to different environments, behaviours, and group dynamics.
  • Ability to remain calm and supportive in challenging situations, with team support.
  • Conscientious, confident, and adaptable when engaging with young carers.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Awareness of professional boundaries and appropriate conduct in community settings.
  • Flexible approach to working hours (evenings, weekends, and school holidays).
  • Passion for achieving a high-quality, positive experience for young carers.

Additional Notes / Special Requirements

  • Consistent commitment to agreed hours is essential, activities may need to be cancelled if volunteers are unable to attend at short notice and cannot be replaced.
  • An enhanced DBS check and reference verification will be required before commencing the role.
