New Guide Launched to Help Carers Navigate Continuing Healthcare (CHC)

NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) is a type of care package arranged and funded entirely by the NHS for adults with complex, ongoing health needs. It can cover the full cost of care, whether it’s provided in a care home, nursing home, or the person’s own home. To qualify, a person must be assessed as having a primary health need, meaning their care is mainly about managing health issues rather than social or personal care needs. CHC is not means-tested, so eligibility is based on health needs not income or savings.

For unpaid carers, understanding CHC can be vital, as it may relieve the emotional and financial pressure of caring for a loved one. Over the years, an increasing number of carers have approached Carers Trust Solihull, confused about the continuing healthcare rules and whether their cared-for person is eligible for funded care. This is due to the system being very complex, and many will miss out as a result.

With support from UB Healthcare, one of Carers Trust Solihull’s generous supporters and the dedication of Martin Bird, a former carer and passionate advocate for carers’ rights on Solihull Council’s Carers Partnership Board, we’re proud to launch a brand-new guide to help carers better understand the Continuing Healthcare (CHC) process.

“We are delighted to launch this introduction to Continuing Healthcare. There’s simply nothing else like it available in the country. We owe a huge thanks to Uko and his team, along Martin for their incredible efforts in making this happen.”

The CHC process is known for being complex and often overwhelming. That’s why we’ve created a clear, accessible booklet designed to demystify it. With support from Sydney Mitchell Solicitors supporting our ongoing CHC workshops for carers, we aim to equip more carers with the knowledge they need to advocate for their loved ones effectively, especially when CHC becomes crucial for maintaining their cared-for’s quality of life.

“Martin brought his invaluable perspective as a carer, and we at UB Healthcare produced the content,” explained Uko. “UBH has supported Carers Trust Solihull at every step. It’s vital that ordinary people understand how the system works so they can make sure their loved ones are properly assessed.”

Martin added: “I’ve worked with Solihull Council and the ICB to help improve their website information. But Brandon and I have always believed there should be a local, easy-to-understand guide that carers can keep on hand ready for whenever they might need it. Being prepared in advance is essential.”

We know that navigating health and care systems can be daunting, especially when you’re already juggling so much as an unpaid carer. Our hope is that this CHC guide will offer you clarity, confidence, and a sense of control when you need it most. With the right information, you can be better prepared to ensure your loved one receives the care they deserve.
